HomeCosts.ca is published as a free, no-login planning resource within the PRPTY Network, a Canadian real estate group. Brokerage services referenced across the network are brokered by Real Broker.

How is the site funded, and does that affect the content?

The site is funded by the PRPTY Network and by enquiries from readers who choose to get in touch. Content rules are the same either way: no invented figures, no guarantees, and every jurisdiction-specific claim linked to the official authority.

Why do some pages refuse to give a dollar figure?

Because for several costs there is no honest national figure. Insurance premiums are individually underwritten, property tax depends on a municipal assessment, and land transfer tax depends on province and municipality. In those cases we publish the method, the inputs, and the authority to confirm with.

How do I report an error?

Use the contact form on the site or email info@prpty.ca with the page URL and the figure or statement in question. Corrections that involve an official source change are prioritised.

How does HomeCosts.ca decide what to publish?

Every figure must trace to an official Canadian source that we link and date, or to arithmetic the page shows in full. Where a cost is genuinely address-specific we publish the method and the authority to confirm with, rather than a national average. We do not publish testimonials, ratings, usage counts or guarantees, and we remove claims we cannot verify.

No invented numbers: We do not publish an average, a rate, or a premium unless an official source states it and we can link that source. Where a figure is genuinely address-specific — property tax, insurance, land transfer tax — we publish the method and the authority instead of a national average.
Every calculator shows its formula: Each tool exposes the arithmetic it used, the assumptions behind it, and a plain-language note on what the estimate cannot establish. Prefilled values are labelled as illustrative editable examples, never as current market rates.
Jurisdiction is stated, not implied: Canadian home costs are governed provincially and municipally. Pages state which jurisdiction the guidance applies to and link the provincial or municipal authority rather than generalising across the country.
Sources are dated: External references carry a source-link-checked date. If a rule changes between reviews, the official page is authoritative and this site is not.
No testimonials, ratings or usage claims: We do not publish reviews, user counts, success statistics or guarantees. Nothing on this site is presented as social proof.
Advice boundaries are explicit: HomeCosts.ca is a planning resource. It is not mortgage, legal, tax, insurance or engineering advice, and it does not replace a lender's commitment, a lawyer's opinion, an inspection, or an insurer's quote.
No login, no tracking of your inputs: The calculators run in your browser. Figures you enter are not required to be submitted anywhere to get a result, and there is no account to create.
Corrections are welcome and acted on: If a figure, source link or method on this site is wrong or out of date, tell us and we will correct or remove it. Removal is preferred over leaving an unverifiable claim in place.

Review cycle

Pages carry a review date. Cost pages that depend on statutory rules — land transfer tax, mortgage insurance thresholds, registered account limits — are re-checked against the official source when a page is edited and at least annually. Where a review finds a source has moved or a rule has changed, the page is updated or the claim is removed rather than left in place with a caveat.
