Making a utilities estimate reflect your actual home
Utility spending is driven by the building, the equipment, the household and the rate plan — four things no generic figure knows. The estimate here uses the numbers you enter; these are the numbers worth getting right.
Gather these inputs first
- Twelve consecutive months of electricity, gas and water consumption in the units your bills use (kWh, GJ or m³, m³)
- Your current rate plan name, and whether it is regulated, fixed-term or time-of-use
- Heated floor area, and how many storeys are conditioned
- Primary heating fuel, and how water is heated
- Number of occupants and whether anyone is home during the day
- Whether you have air conditioning, and any electric vehicle charging
Documents and bills to have open
- Your last 12 monthly or 6 bi-monthly bills from each utility
- The delivery, distribution and fixed-charge lines on those bills, not just the total
- Your retail energy contract, if you buy from a retailer rather than the default supplier
- Any EnerGuide home evaluation report you have
- For condos and rentals: what the fee or rent already covers
What this estimate can establish
- A monthly and annual figure built from your own consumption and your own rate
- How sensitive that figure is to a rate change or a usage change
- Which parts of your bill are fixed charges you cannot reduce by consuming less
- Where a gap exists between what you assumed and what your bills show
What it cannot establish
- What your utility will charge next year — rates are set by regulators and suppliers
- A typical bill for your city, which depends on the building far more than the postal code
- Savings from an upgrade you have not had assessed
- Which rebates you qualify for or how much they pay
- Whether time-of-use or a fixed contract is better for your consumption pattern
Questions to ask your utility or supplier
- Which rate plan am I on, and what alternatives am I eligible for?
- What is fixed on my bill regardless of consumption, and what varies?
- Can you send me 12 or 24 months of my own consumption data?
- If I switch plans, is there an exit fee or a minimum term?
- Do you offer equal-payment billing, and how is the true-up handled?
- Do you run any efficiency, audit or appliance programs I can apply to?
